3D printing for high-end design models

4 minutes

At IMMStudios in Renningen, we have spent years turning CAD data into full-scale design models for automotive, aerospace and defense. Few technologies have changed our work as much as 3D printing. Here is why I believe it is a game changer for every client who needs a high-end model, fast and flawless.

What 3D printing makes possible

Additive manufacturing builds a part layer by layer, straight from the digital file. Geometries that are hard or impossible to mill or mould become routine: internal channels, undercuts, lattice structures and organic surfaces. A steering wheel, gear shift, centre console or light unit can go from CAD to physical part in days instead of weeks. Because we print at large scale, we are not limited to small components. Complete interior and exterior sections are within reach.

Choosing the right material

The material defines the result. We work with plastics, metals and hybrid solutions, each chosen for the job:

  • Fine-detail polymers for presentation surfaces that need a flawless finish
  • Tough engineering plastics for functional prototypes that must click, flex or carry load
  • Metal for parts that face heat, stress and real-world testing
  • Hybrid builds that combine printed parts with carbon fiber, CNC-milled elements and our in-house paint finish

Why it is a game changer for clients

For our clients, the benefits are tangible:

  • Speed: shorter development cycles and faster design reviews
  • Design freedom: designers no longer have to compromise on form
  • Precision: automotive-grade accuracy, right the first time
  • Cost control: less waste and instant iterations without new tooling

Together with CNC milling, clay modeling and high-end finishing, 3D printing lets us deliver models that look and perform like the final product.
