Sculpting a Supercar

When Mercedes-Benz challenges designers to push the boundaries of automotive aesthetics, the result is rarely just a car—it is a physical manifestation of future design language. Recently, our specialized prototype studio was tasked with an extraordinary project: engineering and constructing a massive 3.00 x 9.00-meter physical design study for the iconic German automaker.

The core creative brief? “Pure and Clean.

The mission was to create a monumental sculpture where clear, organic forms and purist aesthetics converged. It required blending the boundary-pushing ethos of modern concept cars with the romantic, aerodynamic lines of classic 1930s automotive design.

The Core Challenge:
Transforming 1,700 Cubicles into a Fluid Contour

Sculpting a car at this scale introduces massive structural and surface challenges. The design required a complex mathematical transition: a perfectly smooth, slick aerodynamic surface that seamlessly dissolved into an intricate network of over 1,700 individual, geometric cubicles—all while maintaining a continuously curving, fluid silhouette.

Executing this required an intense cross-disciplinary effort. Our team had to manage:

Extreme Scale: Building a physical sculpture 9 meters long requires structural armatures that prevent sagging or warping over time. Complex Surface Topology: Ensuring the transitions between the smooth “slick” surfaces and the geometric cubicles were visually flawless under studio lighting. Radical Time Constraints: Completing an intricate, museum-grade prototype of this magnitude typically takes months. We were given a strict window of just 4 weeks.

The Sculpting Process:
Reimagining 1930s Aerodynamics for the Future

To capture the true essence of the Mercedes-Benz design language, our team looked to the past to invent the future. The sweeping, dramatic proportions of the 1930s streamliners—originally crafted by legendary coachbuilders using traditional hand hammers and wooden bucks—were completely transformed using modern digital fabrication and advanced physical sculpting techniques.
